Big hair, crochet art and better sleep

Live, learn and connect like never before… get ready for a program of fun activities presented by the Sunshine Coast Council.

Sunshine Coast Libraries are hosting an exciting calendar of events and workshops for people of all ages to celebrate Queensland Senior Month in October.

Highlights include the ability to relive the bold fashions, big hair and wonderful soundtrack of the Australian film classic, Muriel’s weddingand fascinating workshops on health and wellness, tips for taking great shots on your cell phone, and how you can make a difference as a volunteer.

Queensland Seniors Month recognizes the valuable contribution seniors make to the community, whether as volunteers or in the workforce, as community leaders or carers, grandparents or advocates.

Seniors’ Month also provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes toward seniors and aging, facilitate community involvement, and improve community bonds. The initiatives align with the Queensland Government and Council on the Aging (COTA) Queensland vision of building age-friendly communities.

COTA’s theme this year is Social Connections and connecting with each other has never been more important. Queensland Senior’s Month will provide opportunities for people of all ages, cultures and abilities to connect through inclusive events and activities.

Senior Citizens Month runs from October 1 to October 31, 2022.

Daytime screening of Muriel’s Marriage at the Cinema

Celebrate Queensland Senior Month with a daytime screening of the classic Aussie film Muriel’s wedding at the Strand Cinema Caloundra on Tuesday 18 October.

Hosted by Sunshine Coast Libraries, come enjoy the bold fashion, voluminous hair and feel-good soundtrack of Muriel’s wedding.

Tickets are on sale now for $10 per person and include a free chocolate ice cream.

Muriel’s wedding is a 1994 Australian comedy-drama film written and directed by PJ Hogan. The film, which stars Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths, Jeanie Drynan, Sophie Lee and Bill Hunter, focuses on socially awkward Muriel whose ambition is to have a glamorous marriage and improve her personal life by leaving his dead-end hometown, the fictional Porpoise Spit, in Sydney.

Special storytelling session for grandparents

Join Sunshine Coast Libraries for a special grandparent storytelling session at the Brightwater Community Park Story Seat on Wednesday, October 5.

There will be games, story time and lots of fun. Be sure to pack a blanket, morning tea and a hat.

When: Wednesday, October 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

This activity is FREE and suitable for children up to 5 years old.

Free workshops, programs and sessions with Sunshine Coast Libraries

Explore the range of exciting sessions held by libraries during Seniors Month.

Learn the art of crochet with the Country Women’s Craft Group. The introductory crochet session will teach you the essentials of entering a slip knot, chain stitches and progressing to single and double crochet stitches.

Listen to trained naturopath Cassandra Cook explain how to balance hormones and manage hormonal symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, low libido, weight gain or sugar cravings.

Owner of the Sustainable Health and Wellness Clinic, Sandra shares her tips on what to eat for healthy hormones and how hormone imbalances can be associated with the thyroid, ovaries and adrenals.

Enjoy a fun and free hands-on workshop with Aminya Natural Therapies Academy Aromatherapist Denise Lynds. Practice giving a reflexology hand massage using aromatherapy oils. Try different blends targeted at stress, sleep and motivation. Learn how to safely dilute and mix essential oils.

Heritage Conference

Discover local heritage events at Bankfoot House and the Landsborough Museum. Delve into South East Queensland’s flood history with Dr Margaret Cook.

Sunny Coast Open Day

Sunshine Coast Open House is the region’s largest public architecture and design festival with behind-the-scenes tours and special experiences.

Join special tours to learn about Bankfoot House’s heritage colors and archaeological finds.
