before this Moon, I was finally able to take a tour of the Lakepoint Sports Complex, located just off Interstate 75 in Emerson, Georgia, about 40 miles north of Atlanta. A year-round youth sports destination that hosts a variety of competitions with state-of-the-art facilities including 8 baseball fields, 3 versatile fields, 10 beach volleyball courts and the Champions Center, which can host up to 12 full-court basketball games. Or 24 volleyball games. Owner Rimrock Capital has ambitious plans to expand the campus, serving more than a million people a year. The complex is impressive and Lakepoint is the headquarters for the national convention, so we were there on a busy Sunday to catch a traveling team baseball game as part of a partnership with Prep Baseball Report. What LakePoint Sports leaders need is vertical integration with wholly owned and operated tournaments. Leaders are also envisioning more playgrounds, additional parking and mixed-use developments, and are seeking more luxury hotels and sit-down dining restaurants in Emerson’s tiny enclave. Yes, youth sports have their challenges. Fragmented by different leagues and operators, they are often expensive and difficult to access. However, looking at the number of young people participating in sports in this issue (watch the story) and then look at facilities like LakePoint Sports, leveraging new technology, data, and content, and discover that the lottery runs 365 days a year, from 7 a.m. to past midnight on the busiest months. I can understand the possibilities.
